US 106Sinclair Communications formally introduced its Country format today as "US106, America's Country" WUSH signing-on at 5 p.m. with Alan Jackson's (ft Jimmy Buffett) "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere."

This is the Group's second attempt at the Country format. Kick-FM debuted December 2003 on Sinclair's 93.7. When Adult/Variety Hits "BOB-FM" did so well on the new move-in signal 106.1, the two stations swapped formats. Six months later (2/2005) Kick-FM on 106.1 was killed for a Contemporary Hit Radio format.

:// Plug finally pulled on Energy 106.1
Frequency to try Country again as "US106"

  |

Two days after the Fall radio ratings ended, Sinclair Communications laid to rest the Energy name and format on 106.1 today just before 2 p.m. to go to Country. For now, it's "Garth 106." The last track on Energy was N Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye." The first on "Garth" was "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks. Energy had been on auto-pilot since late August.

The signal, doing whatever format, has suffered ratings-wise. VARTV reported back in August the short but active history of the 106.1 signal targeting the Hampton Roads market:
  • Flips to Country on 12/14/2007
  • Flips to Hot AC on 8/27/2007
  • Flips to Rhythmic CHR in late 1/2007
  • Flips to Rhythmic AC on 9/21/2006
  • Flips to CHR on 2/2/2005
  • Swaps formats with 93.7 to go Country on 9/23/2004
  • Frequency signs on (from Poquoson) as Variety Hits on 3/7/2004
  • Was a downtown Norfolk repeater for 96X doing Modern Rock/Alternative since 1995
  • Since the frequency signed on from Poquoson almost four years ago, the format has changed eight times.

The station is ready to move its antenna to Portsmouth as soon as the FCC gives them the blessing. They hit a slight bump in the road when Tidewater Communications Inc (WNOR, WAFX, WJOI) filed an objection to the antenna move to Portsmouth.

:// Clear Channel Roanoke doing the shuffle
      |

Clear Channel Roanoke/Lynchburg shuffles formats and frequencies within its cluster. I was announced this morning that:
  • AC "Sunny 93.5 and 102.7" becomes "Sunny 93.5 and 101.7."
  • Country "104.9 The Bull" becomes "106.1 The Bull."
  • CHR "Jammin JJS" on heard 106.1 and 101.7 will shift to 104.9 102.7.
  • Country WYYD/107.9 and Rock WROV/96.3 remain unchanged.
  • Editor's note: The three Clear Channel sticks in Roanoke will probably have to go into trust early next year with the Clear Channel merger. It's public record that the Roanoke/Lynchburg frequencies slated to go into trust are 93.5, 101.7 and 106.1. Clear Channel is obviously making sure that they get to keep the bigger signals. If formats do need to be sold off, it appears that it will be the Sunny and Bull formats.

:// Anchor David Nelson exits LIN TV
      |
    David Nelson
It appears so. Earlier today we received several emails stating that WAVY (10/NBC) Portsmouth/Norfolk and "FOX43" WVBT Virginia Beach anchor David Nelson had exited the duopoly Friday. We checked both websites for WAVY (WAVY.com) and WVBT (MyFOXHamptonRoads.com) at that time and his bio was still on both sites. This evening, Nelson's bio had disappeared from WAVY's site but as of this writing is still on WVBT's website.

Nelson co-anchored the WAVY 5 p.m. newscast and "FOX43 News at 10." He also hosted the weekly high school student quiz show "Battle of the Brains," which airs Saturday mornings at 10 on WAVY but Stephanie Harris took over those duties this season. His tenure was just short of five years at the LIN TV duopoly.
